gamesounds

A daily Wordle-style quiz where you name the video game from its sound.

2026 · live · next.js, typescript, postgres, python, claude

Seven sounds a day, the same seven for everyone, one attempt. Each sound unlocks in steps of one, three and six seconds, and the fewer seconds you needed, and the faster you answered, the more it scores. Answers are picked from a list of real game titles rather than typed freely. Then there is a shareable emoji grid, streaks and a leaderboard. The quiz is in Norwegian.

The sound bank

The clips come from YouTube compilations of iconic game sounds. A pipeline downloads a video, splits it on silence, transcribes it, and has Claude propose which segments make a good quiz question, in windows of a few minutes so long videos are covered evenly. Every proposal is validated strictly, and the titles, descriptions and transcripts are treated as data, never as instructions.

Nothing reaches the quiz without a person listening to it first. An admin review page on the live site marks each clip in or out, with a difficulty and a category, because a wrong answer key kills the game.

No accounts

There is no sign-in. Each browser gets a signed cookie and a profile the first time it plays; a name is optional and only needed for the leaderboard. The day's quiz is made on the first visit of the day, Oslo time, and a clip rests for three weeks after it has been used.
